What Linkin Park Have Done May 3, 2007

Doubtless I’m behind everyone else, but I just heard the new Linkin Park track today, What I’ve Done. There was once a time when I was an enormous LP fan, buying every album and most singles. I still think Hybrid Theory and Meteora stand up pretty well compared to how the genre has evolved; I’ll listen to them for more than just nostalgia’s sake.
But the new song, What I’ve Done, is pretty awful. For one thing, by burying Mike Shinoda’s contributions in the final refrain, they have totally destroyed the thing that made them most popular, and now sound like any run of the mill Emo band. But even for your standard mass-produced pulp, this is dull. A tuneless verse leads into a forgettable chorus; about the only thing with any feeling is the (two-line) pre-chorus. And when you are complementing a pre-chorus, things are bad.
But far, far worse than the song, is the video. Shamelessly using intensely powerful imagery to promote band aid was bad enough. In this song, with no message at all, this type of stuff (Famine in Africa, nuclear explosions, auschwitz) is inexcusable. The best conclusion I can come to is that Linkin Park are accepting responsibility for 9/11. That would be interesting, at least.

I do not agree with you. I think that song is amazing.

  2. a non Says:

Whats wrong with this song its good. Sure we expected somthing that was simalar to there previous abulms when we herd about minutes to midnight. But if you go buy the, cd read the little booklet inside. It will tell how they tried a differnt method and hoped that you would enjoy it. If you dont like it then stop boycotting it and go listen to something else.
linkin park is also not responsible for nine 11 fool. everyone knows if was that dumb ass bush that made that happen. stupid gready man…

  3. garry Says:

linkin park rocks. i thought what ive done was good, whatcha talking about. its differnt but good i hope people relize they ment to change there stlye and that they never screwed up. read the a non guy hes right, in the booklet it does say that and buch is resonsible for nine eleven lol

  4. For some reason, I appear to be very near the top of Google search results for Linkin Park. They move in mysterious ways…
On the plus thing, this allows us to prove two universal truths:
    1) Some people like songs that other people hate, and
    2) The people who like What I’ve Done tend to be idiots.

  5. pro Says:

c’mon the song is great. what i’ve done is the best song of lp i heard. its juz that lp seem to lack the standard live.

    LINKIN PARK ROCKS!

  6. CHESTER ESTAS GUAPISIMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

linkin park rocks. i watched them live in new york city last nite. they were awesome! i dont no his name, but the guy who does all the screaming…..his voice is totally hot!!! you all heard their new song ‘bleed it out’ yet? its great!

  11. Oren Leo Conrad Jones Says:

To all you fools who dis the champs of Linkin Park I say “get ripped”, they are the best band in circulation at the moment and they do what they love, and what I and many others like me love. For you to come out and try and beat them down for doing something different that they believe in smacks of the wingeing of a 4 year old kid!

  12. D H R Says:

what bull shitt d video is as excellent as the song keep rocking linking park n man r u dumb linking park is responsible for 9/11 thats the stupidest comment i hav ever read abt linking park

  13. Oren Leo Conrad Jones: If I were to “beat them down for doing something different” then that would be something to, rightly, attack. Unfortunately, I am beating them down for doing something exactly the same as every other two bit band out there, when they used to do so much more.
D H R: I really want to give you the same reasoned answer that I gave Jones there, but I can’t bring myself to do it. You can’t even spell the bands name. Man, you are dumb.

  14. Felipe Nogueira da Silva Says:

    EU SOU O Fã n° UM DO ({[LINKIN PARK)}] !!!!!

  15. u r gay Says:

you r gay the song is great and the new album is brill so stop wasting time plaining noob

  16. Techno7 Says:

I dont know if you know this. But the kind of music theyre playing now was all planned out back in 1990-1995… Hybrid theory was released as a “teeny bopper attraction method”. Havent you noticed that the music has changed since then? It got heavier with the addition of Reanimation, Meteora, and finally Collision course. Im not sure if you know, but Xero is the kind of music they once wanted. In the end of it all they wanted to be a famous rock band. Like one that you would find in a Hard Rock Cafe on the wall.
What I’ve Done is a major revelation for them and I think it will benefit them in the end. And maybe you didnt notice but all of the tickets for Projekt revolution sold out.

  17. draggie girl Says:

They are still amazing. and yes their style changed a little, but still they are fantastic! I love their new album “minutes to midnight” The lyrics are just so beautiful *sigh*
    linkin park rocks!

  18. Techno7,
I didn’t know that. Seems rather cynical of them, but plenty of others have done it as well. Kaiser Chiefs come to mind. But regardless of how planned it is, the song is still awful.

  19. Jake Says:

You do know the song, “What I Done” , is the whole concept of then album “Midnutes to Midnight” right? Minutes to midnight means that it’s almost the end of the world when everyone starts nuking each other. The whole video shows what the album means by showing all the horrible things in the world. If you hate this video then you’re saying you hate peace.

  20. Jake,
Thanks for writing a coherent comment. Sadly, the video just shows shitloads of nasty things. Even if the song does have any tenable connection to nuclear war, the holocaust doesn’t. Neither does 9/11. Neither does famine in Africa. Linkin Park are just abusing these images, and profiting off their memory.
If you hate this post, you are saying you love pedophiles. Its true.

  21. Blaze Says:

“What I’ve Done” is an alright song, though it’s definitely not their best. As for the video, I’m not sure how that really relates to the song. Linkin Park is still one of my favorite bands, but I hope their future songs are more like the ones from previous albums.

Paul Newman’s Eyes: Nice closing statement. lol

  22. Abi Says:

EXACTLY! We(my close friends and I) “discovered” LP last year, and couldnt wait until the new album came out, only to be very, very disapointed.Linkin Park changed from a kickass band with a unique style to making the same stuff as any other emo band.

  23. Sean Says:

Paul Newman’s Eyes: You are my hero! I feel exactly the same about the song “What I’ve Done”. I feel it’s a real disgrace on what Linkin Park used to be. I still love the band, no doubt, but they are delving themselves into politics, something they had not done before. This is a double edged sword, they are expressing themselves, and that’s a good thing. But on the other hand, they are relying less on their musical talent and now trying to feed us their messages.

Linkin Park is killing their old image, they were incredibly innovative with their first two original albums, what a shame.

    R.I.P- Linkin Park
    -Sean

  24. pravakar Says:

  26. sponge Says:

well… i agree with Paul Newman’s Eyes. They used to be a lot better. To me, Hybrid Theory and Meteora seemed to be their best work. btw, my favourite song is Figure .09

  27. Meteora was their best CD. Linkin Park has gone downhill since their AWESOME beginning, But they are still a great band. They are just trying too hard is all. I never have liked too many of their videos, and What I’ve Done Definitely isn’t one of their best.

  28. Ashley Says:

Linkin Park is awesome, you cant blame them for trying something differant..you shouldnt judge them by some song that is on the radio every 5 seconds…you should listen to all their songs on M2M. Dur.

  29. Pavan Says:

whatever… its not imagery i fell in love with. i’ve first heard the MP3 version and then saw the Video.
what i’ve done was the song that i liked.may not be the best, IT just rocks.
well if u think music should be done only about human feelings and things its just being narrow.

it shows exactly how ppl are. and how we have to make things better for other creatures.i guess if u arent a nature lover, u aint gonna like it.

they have just diversified, who knows may be they wanted a change for a new album.

  30. Pavan Says:

LP with JayZ was a idiotic al-BUM(er)

  31. petrit Says:

hej linking park jur band are mor beter and i like you
    i’m albanian people

  32. someone else Says:

how could you hate that song its so awesome i would rate it 100000000 out of 10

  33. Jenny Says:

Okay Paul Asshole, Im a poor innocent kid who grew up on Linkin Park and will never let them be replaced with any other band in my life! I was looking for some new Linkin Park stuff online and this bullshit came up! What the hell! If u have any more shit to say about Mike Shanoda or Chester Bennington or Joe hon or any of them! U can just shove those fucked up words back down ur throat!GOT IT!!!!!!

  34. Anne Says:

Hey everyone has their choices. Whether they like Linkin Park or not. But u cant say that their horrible. Their just different to ur standards. I mean do u have the balls to perform infront of the world? Can u even make an album that sells millions? I personally luv Linkin Park. Even their side projects. I have ever since I can remember. And no other band could replace them. Its kewl if u guys dont like them, and its awesome that some of u guys are defending them. I will buy all their albums, and their new one was the best yet. If u listen to the lyrics u will c. Its not the videos that define their image, its what they stand for and what they say to their audience. And thats y i like them. Nobodys Listening, Breaking the Habit, and Leave Out All The Rest are my favorites. Machine Shop!

  35. kaiomi Says:

Why are all of Linkin Park’s fans simple-minded?

We must understand that its “hard to be a band” and make allowances for them, yet if there is one thing somebody doesn’t like?

“ZOMG THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME YOU BETTER DIE BECAUSE I CAN’T RESPECT OTHER OPINIONS THAT ARE DIFFERENT FROM MY OWN. You must be tolerant of everything *I* like, but I won’t tolerate anything you think because I said so.”

The only people that disagree with you have no way to defend their points. I don’t understand the senseless attacks on you saying, “Yeah, I don’t like them that much anymore.”

  36. Runescape rocks Says:

    Wtf?This song is super powerful.
    I love it.
BY the way does anyone doesnt play runescape anymore then pm in runescape.
My name on it is thushan44

  37. Runescape rocks Says:

Sorry i mean if u have a spare account because i need one

  38. Saving Ryan's Privates Says:

    Linkin Park is Bad Ass

  39. Let there be light Says:

Okay i grew up with Linkin Park like most of you, but I’m still the first to admit that What I’ve Done just wasn’t that good. However the album Minutes to Midnight wasn’t bad on the whole, I liked Bleed it out and Shadow Of the Day.

There is no need to fight over whether the album was bad or good. If you must fight at least give reason, cuz Linkin Park is awesome, is not an argument.

If you don’t like Minutes to Midnight the listen to something else (i recommend Good Morning Revival “Good Charlotte”) and if you do stop trying to force others to as well. Just shut up and listen to the songs if you really like them so much.

P.S. Runescape guy WTF does your comment have to do with Linkin Park.

  40. Jesse Says:

One question. What makes it a bad song? Maybe if U grew up like the band did, you would enjoy it more. But no, there is always goin to be tools like u who have to bag the song for whatever reason. Just Face It. The Band Grew Up, The Fans Grew Up, U didn’t.

  41. linker Says:

    FU ckin Bad Joke man!!!?!
    n it wsnt funny.
n can u compose better dan dem? Sur r 1 to talk.
If They r too bad for ur taste dont listen to them.
